Hammers catch winger Feghouli

Algeria winger Sofiane Feghouli will join West Ham United on a free transfer on 1 July 2016
The 26-year-old will arrive after six seasons with Spanish side Valencia CF
Capped 40 times, the wideman has also featured more than 40 times in European competitions

West Ham United are delighted to announce the capture of exciting Algeria winger Sofiane Feghouli from Valencia CF.

The 26-year-old will arrive from Spain on a three-year contract on a free transfer on 1 July, having successfully completed his medical at Spire Roding Hospital and agreed personal terms.

The Paris-born wideman has been a regular in La Liga since joining Valencia from French side Grenoble in 2010, scoring 42 goals in 243 appearances for Los Che.

Feghouli, who has scored eleven goals in 40 caps for the country of his parents’ birth, is looking forward to playing under Hammers boss Slaven Bilic in the Premier League.

"I am very happy to sign for the Hammers and for Slaven Bilic," Feghouli told whufc.com. "The history of the Club is important for me in my decision.

"Playing in the Premier League is very important for players in their careers and I am happy to play for the Hammers."

Born in the northern Paris suburb of Levallois-Perret on Boxing Day 1989, Feghouli spent time with local clubs Red Star and Paris FC before joining Grenoble as a teenager.

The winger spent six seasons in the Alps, helping Grenoble gain promotion to Ligue 1 in 2007/08, and moved on to Valencia following the club’s relegation two years later.

After a loan spell with Almeria, Feghouli was a first-team regular for his new club from the start of the 2011/12 season, averaging nearly 50 appearances over each of the last five campaigns.

Among them were 42 appearances in European competition, including 22 in the UEFA Champions League, which brought the Algerian an impressive haul of ten goals.

The 2012 Algerian Footballer of the Year, Feghouli is an important figure for his national team, appearing at three major tournaments.

The West Ham new boy played age-group football for France before pledging his allegiance to Algeria in 2011, scoring the winner on his debut in an African Cup of Nations qualifier against The Gambia in February 2012.

After helping the Desert Foxes to qualify for the Brazil 2014, Feghouli netted his country’s first FIFA World Cup goal in 28 years when he scored from the penalty spot against Spain.

Feghouli could come face to face with new teammates Cheikhou Kouyate and Diafra Sakho at the 2017 African Cup of Nations in January after both Algeria and Senegal clinched qualification earlier this month.

However Bilic himself has said that you get the most out of Payet when he's on the left and can cross and run the diagonals.

I'd be surprised if he played him central after saying that on ITV the other night

I like this because it seems Bilic is preparing to play Payet central. Feghouli is an absolute top class player. Our squad has increased its strength massively with him in.

Thanks for the delayed morning wood. At least a semi. That makes good reading, and I hope it turns out right.

Sofiane Feghouli can turn West Ham United into Champions League contenders

Jason Pettigrove for Metro.co.ukWednesday 15 Jun 2016 8:23 pm

Despite Slaven Bilic gracing our screens for Euro 2016 coverage, West Ham’s money men have been hard at work, bringing in the Hammers’ second summer signing.

If anyone doubted just how astute the Croatian was in the transfer market, they only need take a look at the debut season’s Dmitri Payet and Michail Antonio have just had in the claret and blue.

Now Sofiane Feghouli can be added to the list and the ex-Valencia star is yet another exciting addition who’ll have the locals off of their seats at the Olympic Stadium and beyond.

Just 26 years old, he’s precisely the right age to complement Bilic’s studiously crafted squad.
Old enough to have gained the experience required at the top level, young enough to still be a force for a few years.

And West Ham will have him for at least three of those after tying up a free transfer which was announced on Tuesday.

A total of 42 goals in 243 professional appearances doesn’t speak of a player that is a threat in scoring terms, but then Feghouli’s natural game was never about goals anyway.

The French-born Algerian international likes nothing better than staying out wide and bearing down on his marker in a one-on-one.

Don’t let him past you because he is lightning quick and will chase everything. There’s no such thing as a lost cause with Feghouli around.

He is comfortable in possession for the most part and tricky with it. Ample upper body strength means he’s adept at keeping hold of the ball too.

If there’s one Achilles heel to his game it’s a fiery temper which has often landed him in trouble. An unnecessary red card against Barcelona for hitting Carles Puyol in the face being one such incident.
Get under his skin and the mist will still descend. Perhaps Bilic has bought him for precisely that edge to his game, or maybe there’s more chance of the Croatian educating the youngster in how things are done on these shores.

One thing is clear.
The Hammers might have got a freebie but Feghouli definitely isn’t a dud.

Depending how quickly he gets used to the fast and furious pace of the English top flight, he could become, like Payet before him, the bargain of the campaign.

As Bilic continues to pad out his squad with quality assists, Feghouli could be looking at helping the club to their first ever Champions League finish this time in twelve months.

Yes, he’s that good.

That's at the OS, that's where he went yesterday and the changing room has had the full 'West Hamification' treatment... though obviously with dodgy tilers.

That's the changing room at Upton Park. I doubt they worry too much now about how centred the hammers are.
